Earlsdon Park

For Fong Ha Chen, who prefers to be known as Jessica, volunteering at a retirement village has completely transformed her confidence, skills, and opportunities. Arriving in England from Hong Kong with limited ability to communicate in English, Jessica initially found it challenging to engage with others and navigate everyday tasks.

Determined to improve, she began volunteering in the kitchen at Earlsdon Park Village restaurant, where she could contribute while gradually building her language skills in a supportive environment.

Through her dedication and willingness to learn, Jessica’s confidence grew steadily. What began as behind-the-scenes support soon developed into a much broader role. She progressed to serving customers in the restaurant, learning how to operate a table service, and eventually managing the till. Along the way, she also developed an understanding of British currency, an important milestone that gave her greater independence and trust in her abilities. Her achievement in passing food safety training further reflects her commitment and professionalism.

Jessica now thrives in her role and particularly enjoys interacting with residents and building meaningful connections through conversation and service. She speaks warmly about her experience at Earlsdon Park Village, where she feels valued and supported and is now a Hospitality Assistant. Volunteering has not only helped her improve her practical and communication skills but it has also played a crucial role in helping her secure paid employment.

Reflecting on her journey, Jessica says: “I was very nervous when I first came to England because I could not speak much English. Volunteering helped me learn step by step and gave me confidence to try new things. Now I can talk to customers, use the till, and feel proud of what I can do. I really enjoy speaking with the residents every day. I would like to thank the kitchen staff for their support, especially Julie the Chef, who has been very patient and supportive throughout my journey.”
