Environmental, Social and Governance

Environmental

As a Charity, we remain firmly committed to improving our environmental performance and reducing our carbon footprint. We have set an ambitious target to achieve net zero by 2045, underpinned by a corporate-wide strategy that maps our ongoing progress towards this goal.

ExtraCare influences the environment both directly, through the management of our properties, and indirectly, through activities such as business travel, the procurement of goods and services, and strategic developments including the construction of new villages. Our Retail subsidiary not only generates vital funds for our Charity but also makes a meaningful contribution to recycling efforts and the diversion of reusable goods away from landfill.

Social

As a Charitable organisation, delivering social value is integral to our purpose. Our procurement and operational teams work together to ensure that social value considerations are embedded within our activities, and we seek to generate wider benefits for residents and the communities in which we operate, alongside delivering our core services.

We maintain strong relationships with our supply chain to promote innovation and continuous improvement. This enables us to respond to emerging opportunities and adopt approaches that enhance the experience of our residents while supporting broader social outcomes.

Governance

ExtraCare is a registered Charity and a private company limited by guarantee. We have no shareholders, and any surpluses are reinvested back into the Charity. We are led by a Board of Trustees, all of whom are directors for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006. We are monitored and supervised by external regulators including the Regulator of Social Housing (RSH). The Care Quality Commission (CQC), the Charity Commission, the Health and Safety Executive, the Building Safety Regulator, the Fundraising Regulator and the Information Commissioners Office.

The Board of Trustees is collectively responsible for the long-term success of the Charity and is accountable to Members and other stakeholders. It sets the strategic direction of ExtraCare, including defining our vision mission and values, and holds the Chief Executive and Executive Leadership Team to account for performance, governance and standards of conduct.
