ExtraCare Volunteer Honoured at King’s Garden Party
A dedicated resident volunteer from ExtraCare’s Bournville Gardens Village recently attended the King’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, a prestigious event that celebrates individuals who selflessly give their time to support others.
Diane Badrick has been a valued member of Bournville Gardens Village community for over 10 years, ever since moving to the village. Her tireless commitment to volunteering earned her a Liz Taylor Award from ExtraCare in recognition of her outstanding contributions and with it, an invitation to the royal event.
Diane’s work has touched many corners of village life. She has run the bring-and-buy stall for several years, raising vital funds for local causes. She also volunteers regularly at the village bistro and lends her time to the Knit and Natter group.
Multiple nominations praised her dedication, with one noting: “Diane will do anything for anybody at any time. Over the past seven years, all proceeds from her extensive recycling project have gone to various charities. To date, more than £5,000 has been donated thanks to her hard work. She is always helpful and thinking of others.”
Diane and her daughter at Buckingham Palace
Reflecting on her experience at Buckingham Palace, Diane said: “I felt very honoured to be invited to the King’s Garden Party, lucky and totally surprised. It was wonderful to experience the day with my daughter. I saw some beautiful outfits and uniforms, the weather was great, and the whole day was splendid. Every refreshment area was spectacularly decorated, with staff on hand, serving us posh sandwiches. Walking around the grounds was perfect, with everyone dressed in their finery.”
A personal highlight for Diane was spotting members of the Royal Family: “I saw six members, King Charles and Queen Camilla, Princess Anne and Sir Timothy Laurence, and Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie. It was my favourite part of the day.”
Diane, who began volunteering nine years ago, says the experience never felt like work: “Back then, I just missed working. I like feeling useful and giving back. I feel so lucky to live at Bournville Gardens.” Although she was honoured to receive the award, Diane remains modest about her achievements: “It was a huge honour, but I don’t do any of it for reward or recognition. I do what I do because it makes me feel better. Volunteering is good for you, it helps you mix, it’s enjoyable, good for the brain, and it’s nice to feel like I’m still working!”
