EA First Supports ExtraCare in Volunteering Efforts

Written by Charlotte Millions

A partnership is thriving between ExtraCare and recruitment agency EA First Ltd.

Volunteers from EA First have been hard at work visiting locations to assist with various outdoor projects, as part of their aim of working volunteering hours across ExtraCare locations.

The team have raised over £1400 of their hoped for £2000 target for the charity through employee-driven fundraising initiatives, client donations, and events, highlighting their ongoing commitment.

We sat down with EA First’s Associate Director Matthew Dowson to find out more about their involvement and how corporate social responsibility can truly make a difference.

How did you get involved in this partnership?

I was keen for us to utilise our corporate social responsibilities (CSR) and find a way to enhance society and the environment. We support a charity each year and this year decided on ExtraCare, a charity I have had the pleasure to recruit and partner with for over a decade. I visited Earlsdon Park Village in January with Fundraising Manager Mark and after the visit I was so impressed, I was able to see what ExtraCare were doing first hand and what wonderful places these locations are for someone coming to the end of working life. I was really taken with what ExtraCare were doing and impressed by the number of resident and external volunteers that donated their time too. It struck me that it must be quite hard to get voluntary donations and time, and after the work we’ve done with ExtraCare this felt like our chance to give back.

What have you been involved in so far?

We visited two locations in October, splitting our team to attend one each. Five of us attended Bournville Gardens Village in Birmingham. At the village we emptied and re-potted multiple large pots, replaced and sieved soil, replanted about 150 bulbs and repositioned a large water fountain planter. We also helped in the gardens and cut back rose bushes. Resident volunteers helped project manage us too.

Over at a second location Sunley Court in Kettering five more of our employees were given various gardening activities to do, including sanding down and repainting a shed, sanding and painting a bench, weeding and tidying up potted plants, and jet washing the garden area.

Why did you choose to partner with ExtraCare, why did you want to support?

There are so many charities out there and everyone may naturally lean to charities that have a relevance to their personal experience like charities raising money for specific illnesses, or hospice support. ExtraCare are offering a service to support older people, their locations are not only wonderful living environments for any retirees but they are assisting society in an affordability sense, and helping residents with more specific health and care needs too.

What was the highlight of the volunteering day for you?

Seeing individual snippets of village life. There is a lovely pond at Bournville Gardens and the gentleman who looked after the pond there seemed to be the fish expert, he came out personally to thank us for the work we were doing. We watched him embracing his own landscape and taking responsibility to feed the fish, it just represented a lovely sense of community, and of everyone mucking in.

A second group volunteered at Bournville Gardens.

How did your team find the respective days?

I attended the Bournville day. It was wonderful. The owner of our company David rolled up his sleeves and helped rectify a flower bed that was on a slant, David and the resident who were project managing, straightened it out and put fresh flowers in. Now as you walk down the centre of the gardens it’s straight, David was so invested and committed in this task.

Our Operations Manager, Ivy-Elisa, worked alongside a resident with a rose garden and said she’d love to support older people in other ways going forward. Another colleague Raj became a soil expert overnight!

We spend a lot of our time nowadays on mobile and Teams meetings, it was really nice to do something active, make a difference to others and most importantly the residents seemed to be really pleased about what we’d done.

Why do you think it’s a good idea take part in CSR activities like this?

I oversee our Not-for-Profit Recruitment Division, so I championed this. It was great to do this just to say thank you. As a key supplier, I wanted to recognise ExtraCare and give something back both with donations and with time.

As a business you can give to a fantastic charity, but you can get a lot back yourselves. We learned so much about one another on these days. My colleague Eugen for example was using the trowel like a bricklayer would, and I found out on the day that he used to be one, I never knew that. We learned a lot about one another; we didn’t talk about recruitment for a minute of the day. It’s a brilliant chance for your staff to get to know one another outside of your usual working environment. Why pay thousands of pounds on an away day when you can enjoy team bonding while working for charities who could really do with your help?
