Leaving a gift in your Will

|

Leaving a gift in your Will to ExtraCare will ensure we will be able to provide better lives for older people now and in the future. It is a lasting legacy which will mean people living in ExtraCare homes will have the community, advice, support and care when they need it.

Some people believe that leaving a gift in their Will would be at the expense of their loved ones – but this does not have to be the case.

All you need to know about leaving a gift to ExtraCare

1. Ways to give through your Will

  • Specific gift – You can donate an asset, land, shares or physical item like jewellery or an antique. It can also be practical items that we can sell through our shops.
  • Pecuniary gift – You can choose to give a set amount to ExtraCare .
  • Whole estate – You can choose to leave your estate in it’s entirety to ExtraCare.
  • Residual gift – You can choose to leave a percentage of your estate to ExtraCare. This can be after individual gifts (e.g. 20% of my estate after specific or pecuniary gifts.)

2. Can ExtraCare be my Executor?

We are unable to execute your Will for you. This is because we don’t have the expertise or resources to support you in this way. If you do not have an executor, please talk to your solicitor for advice.

3. What’s the best way to donate through my Will?

Your affairs are as individual as you are, so we can’t really tell you this. Your solicitor will be an expert in this kind of thing, so will be able to advise you of the best way to organise your affairs.

4. Are there any tax advantages to leaving a gift to ExtraCare?

There can be tax relief available for some levels of charitable giving through your Will. Currently, if you leave 10% or more to charity then your estate will be taxed at 36% rather than 40%. However you should discuss this with your solicitor to ensure you get appropriate advice.

5. Can you help me to make a Will?

We don’t currently offer a Will-making programme. For advice on making a Will, see the Government’s advice here.

6. How should I include a gift to ExtraCare in my Will?

Your solicitor will be able to advise on this – but you should include our full charity name, The ExtraCare Charitable Trust, and our registered charity number 327816.

7. Can I tell you what the money needs to be spent on?

In your Will you can add conditions or restrictions on a gift to ExtraCare. This can be done in a legally binding way or as an expression of wishes. An expression of wishes means letting us what you would like the money to be spent on, but is not compulsory.

We always try to honour your wishes, but we prefer to receive gifts without restrictions – as it allows us the freedom to put your kind gift to work where it is needed the most. If a gift comes with restrictions or conditions that we cannot fulfil, we may have no choice but to return your gift. This might mean it defaults to the State.

8. Do I have to let you know?

What’s in your Will is a private matter, and you don’t have to tell us anything. However, we prefer to know so we can say thank you!

Knowing that we have a number of supporters who plan to support us in this way also helps us to plan for the future. You can let us know that you have remembered us in your will, or you intend to, by filling in the form below.
