Hagley Road Retirement Village has been named one of the Top 60 Developments for 2015 by Inside Housing magazine.
The Top 60 Developments celebrate success and innovation in delivering new homes. The list highlights achievement in ten key areas, from design to sustainability. In each area, the best development will be chosen and awarded a winner’s trophy.
Hagley Road Village is highlighted in the Extra care Development of the Year category, and will now compete with five other developments.
The Village provides health and well-being support services that mean residents are healthier than before and the modern facilities (shop, café, gym, Village hall, etc) act as a focal and meeting point for the local community.
Hagley Road Village resident and D-Day veteran, Tony Martin (96), moved to the Village in 2013 with his companion Beryl. He says: “We didn’t come here to retire, we came here to live and that’s what we are doing. There’s so much going on – it’s well-kept, well-run and we’re so happy.”
Dennis Andrews, 71, is a visiting gym member and volunteer from the local community. He says: “We’ve got about 60 members. I use the gym a lot – the social chat and good company is great for me and it’s a lot less intimidating than the other gym I use. I see some remarkable results.”
The category winners will be unveiled at a ceremony on Friday 16 October at the Lancaster London Hotel to celebrate the Top 60 and award the trophies.
Emma Maier, editor of Inside Housing, said:
“Across the UK there is a crisis in the supply of quality, affordable homes. We launched the Top 60 Developments this year to reward those who are excelling in providing much-needed homes. We were inundated with entries from the leading organisations who have been behind the most innovative and impressive projects in the UK. It is a brilliant achievement for Hagley Road Retirement Village to make it into the Top 60 in the face of such fierce competition. We look forward to revealing the winner of the Extra care Development of the Year.”

Integrated Homes, Care and Support: A proven model to achieve better lives for older people
Seven years ago, ExtraCare commissioned a team from Aston University, led by Professor Carol Holland, to evaluate whether our charity’s approach gave positive outcomes for healthy ageing. The longitudinal study lasted three years and the findings were published in 2015. The report showed significant continuous improvements in depression, perceived health and memory, and also a cost reduction to the NHS of 38% as a result of reduced hospital stays, and fewer unplanned and routine GP visits.
