St Oswald’s Retirement Village hosted a fashion show to raise funds for their community.
The show featured 11 models including residents along with their daughters and grand-daughters. Their ages ranged between 8 and 77- years-old. The models showcased clothes made by a member of staff at the village, Shelly-Ann Delpesche, who has a degree in fashion design and originally came up with the idea for the fundraiser.
Those who were lucky enough to get tickets were treated to a two-course meal and a raffle to raise extra money. The Mayoress of Gloucestershire also attended the event.
Sam Hopkins, Village Activities Facilitator at St Oswald’s said: ‘It was a grand event. The money raised will go back into the community to help with more activities for the residents.’
Carol Day, who is a resident at St. Oswald’s Village, and took part in the show alongside her grandchildren, said: ‘The atmosphere was terrific. It was certainly an experience for me, and the children especially loved it. It gives the residents something different to do. Everyone was so enthusiastic.’
The show successfully raised £1,200 which will fund health and well-being activities for residents of the village in Gloucester, operated by retirement charity, The ExtraCare Charitable Trust. The village is home to a community of over 200 residents of which approximately a third receive help for their care from the charity’s Well-being Service.
Recent research shows that levels of depression often associated with isolation and poor health were reduced for those living in ExtraCare’s Retirement Villages, which incorporate affordable housing, active lifestyles and care. Aston Research Centre for Healthy Ageing found that ExtraCare’s model also reduces NHS costs by 38% for their residents.
