A group from ExtraCare’s Lovat Fields Retirement Village in Willen, Milton Keynes, took part in a dragon boat race recently!
Residents were able to watch the annual Dragon Boat Festival at Willen Lake from outside the Village, so that more than just the race team could enjoy the day.
Village Locksmith Colin White-McCarthy, who works with residents who live with dementia, said: “Wimbledon has Murray Mount, Anfield has the Kop and London 2012 had Super Saturday, but none of these could compare to the volume of noise and support generated by those on Lovat Corner!
“In 2014 June Brown had a dream of turning a small corner of Willen Lake into an extension of Lovat Fields Village so that the annual Dragon Boat Festival could be enjoyed by more than just those out on the water.
“12 months on and that one not-so-small corner of Willen Lake erupted with cheers and applause as the Lovat crew, Greased Lightning, approached the start line for their final race.”
The Lovat Fields team were awarded the best dressed crew trophy for their Grease-themed costumes.
Colin added: “Thanks to everyone who was a part of the day whether you were a brave paddler or were one of the many who came over to support the team and watch the racing!”
