Design a Future Living Space for ExtraCare

December, 2017

The ExtraCare Charitable Trust is challenging designers to create a new Smart Pod – a future living space for older people.

ExtraCare is a registered charity which provides homes, care and an inspirational lifestyle for 4,500 older people in 14 retirement villages.

Through its Research and Innovation Strategy, the charity is investing technologies that add value to residents' lives. It will empower ExtraCare residents to take informed decisions about future living spaces and the use of assistive technologies.

With this in mind, ExtraCare will be developing the new Smart Pod to inspire, demonstrate future living possibilities and educate future generations on how the living environment can help not just maintain, but improve quality of life and independence.

The challenge is to design a stand-alone living space that will showcase the future of retirement living in to the 21st Century. The charity is looking for designs that incorporate imaginative spaces, materials and construction features and are flexible, to accommodate assistive equipment and technologies

The deadline for submissions is 31st January 2018.  The final submission will need to include visuals, a plan layout and a design brief and those who are selected as finalists will be invited to present their concept design to the judging panel. The winner will be announced no later than 28th February 2018.

For information on how to register, read more about the challenge here.

- Notes for Editors –

ExtraCare is a registered charity established in 1988 and based in Coventry. Our vision is better lives for older people and our mission is creating sustainable communities that provide homes older people want, lifestyles they can enjoy and care if it’s needed. To deliver our vision and mission we essentially do three things:

Each village or scheme has 5 to 18 social, health and leisure facilities that are accessible to our residents, volunteers and local people representing all age groups living in surrounding communities. Our Charity Shops help fund care and well-being services for older people living at our each of our locations.
