A triathlon for Sheffield retirement village residents

5th August, 2015

Elaine Kirby and Kath Morgan Cresswell from Brunswick Gardens Village in Sheffield have recently completed a triathlon and raised over £600 for the Village’s Gardening Group!

They cycled five miles, walked ten miles and spent one hour in the Village gym on the rowing machines and bikes. “We originally intended to do a walk,” says Kath. “But when I suggested a triathlon, we just went for it. It was a challenge, but we felt we were capable.”

Thanks to sponsorship from staff and residents, the pair have raised £316 for the group. Alongside this, they ran a plant stall which raised an additional £300 and Elaine makes cards which she sells and puts the profit into the garden funds.

Kath takes Zumba classes and goes to the gym in the Village to stay active, and Elaine likes to keep fit by tending to the gardens around the Village. “It’s a real challenge keeping it all looking nice,” she says. “There’s a lot of manual work that needs to be done. I spend a good three hours a day in the gardens.

“It takes a lot to maintain the gardens and plants. We need money for the seeds, pesticides, pots, plant food and so much more too. It’s amazing how quickly money goes when you’re spending it on plants!”

Kath and Elaine are now looking for ways of raising more money. “We just want to say thank you to everyone who has sponsored us,” says Kath. “It would be great to have more people take part in gardening as it’s a great way to stay in shape and stay busy. We’re both really proud of what we have managed to achieve.”
