The ExtraCare scheme's choir sang a selection of wartime favourites, including Run Rabbit Run, A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, and I Vow to Thee My Country.

Resident Monty Marks, proudly wearing his poppy and a Union Jack hat, recited part of Laurence Binyon's poem For The Fallen before the choir began to sing, conducted by their Activity Co-ordinator Liz Williams.

Roger Holder, another resident, explained that the choir had decided to mark the day with a concert as it was very significant. "It's not just the eleventh day of the eleventh month this time, but it's also the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the eleventh year, so we are giving an 11.11.11 concert. This won't happen again for a long time - certainly not in our lifetimes!"

Liz said she was very proud of her choir. "I can't believe it, but it's been five years since I set up the choir. It just started as a group of tenants having a singsong but it's grown and now look how good they are!

"We've done quite a lot for Remembrance Day this year - everyone has their poppies and we had our two minutes' silence this morning. Everyone, even the social group members, was there, and you could have heard a pin drop. It was very emotional."

She added that she would not have been able to organise the event without Roger, who gave up his time to sort out handouts and music for the evening.

Choir member Olive Mather said that the group always enjoys performing. "We had a great time tonight. We always love singing."

The choir finished their concert with three cheers for their Activity Co-ordinator, who is getting married this week.
