Valentine's Day at Seagrave Court, Nottingham

15th February, 2012

Staff and volunteers at Seagrave Court in Nottingham threw a Valentine's Day party for the retirement scheme's 53 residents.

Everyone at the scheme had already got into the spirit of the day, thanks to Activity Co-ordinator PJ Spilsbury, who had given everyone a red rose at lunchtime.

"I just want everyone here to feel special," she said, adding that she had had a lot of support from her volunteers.

"We do everything ourselves here," she explained. "We've been doing food for the party all day and it's been a bit hectic. I had my volunteers working on the roses as well, which we made ourselves. We bought some flowers from the pound shop and they spent a long time wrapping the stalks in red foil."

Resident Elsie Tyler, who was up and dancing to most of the songs, said that she was having a great time, and Seagrave Court's oldest resident, 98-year-old Annie Hall, spent the entire evening on the dance floor, despite being in a wheelchair.

The party was a double celebration as it was also resident Kay Geoffrey's 92nd birthday. As well as the traditional "happy birthday" song, the assembled guests also sang "Teenager in Love" to the birthday girl.

At the end of the evening, the party guests all applauded PJ, who organised the event, and Scheme Manager Billie Fryer. They also thanked their volunteers for the evening, including one who had come along on very short notice!

Billie said PJ had worked particularly hard over the day. "I don't know what we'd do without her here," she said.
