Sheltered Housing Memories at James Beattie House, Wolverhampton

16th February, 2012

A resident at James Beattie House in Tettenhall has taken a trip down memory lane thanks to an old newspaper article about a sheltered housing scheme.

Olive and Diane look through Olive’s old photos of her time working at the sheltered housing scheme.

Olive Mathers, who lives at the Wolverhampton retirement scheme, is the former warden of St Clement's Court in Bilston - a fact she had kept quiet until chef Diane Sadley came across an old article in the Wolverhampton Chronicle.

Diane's wedding announcement was published in the newspaper in 1977, and when looking through the old issue recently, she found a picture of Olive!

Olive said that she had decided to keep her previous career quiet when she moved in to James Beattie House.

"I thought everyone would be looking at me thinking that I knew what they should be doing," she explained. "But I have told staff that if they need any help to come and get me, particularly if there's an emergency in the night, because I'm used to that sort of thing."

She has enjoyed reminiscing about her past experiences since the photo has resurfaced, and has even brought out some of her own photos of events that she organised, including several where she is dressed up.

Diane explained that she had recognised Olive as soon as she saw the picture.

"I knew there could only be one Olive," she said. "She's one of a kind!"
