A Cycleathon in Milton Keynes

13th February, 2012

Lovat Fields Village staff and residents have held their annual Cycleathon to raise money for the Milton Keynes retirement village and the MK Dons Sport and Education Trust.

Fitness Instructor Hayley West has a go on the stationary bike.

Four stationary gym bikes were set up in the street of the retirement village and around 50 residents, staff members and volunteers pedalled continuously for four hours!

Participants had differing abilities, and some people were also able to take part by using a hand bike and a wheelchair access passive cycle.

Fitness Instructor Hayley West thanked everyone who took part in the day. "The four hours showed a total of 204.6 miles, compared to 279 miles over five hours last year, so everyone will now be in training to increase the number of miles for next year!" she said.

"Everyone had a brilliant time, which shows that exercise can be sociable, accessible and enjoyable for all ages."

ExtraCare's Locksmith® Colin White-McCarthy, who works with residents with dementia, said he was most impressed. "There really was great village participation - the event went very well with lots of participants."

He added that he is working hard to improve his own fitness. "Part one of my fitness kick is now done and out of the way! I'm now looking forward to a six-mile jaunt for Sport Relief in March, a team marathon in April and then an adventure and mountain climbing holiday in July."

The group raised £76 from a bucket collection, with over £60 pledged from individual sponsorships.
