ExtraDons Receive an Award

19th December, 2011

ExtraCare's Milton Keynes residents have won an award for a project where they have worked with students from nearby secondary schools.

The ExtraDons project, an intergenerational collaboration between The ExtraCare Charitable Trust and the Milton Keynes Dons Sport and Education Trust, was recognised in the Milton Keynes Council's Golden Wonder awards. The group of residents and students were presented with a trophy by the Mayor of Milton Keynes.

As part of the project, Lovat Fields residents have formed a gardening club with young people from Oakgrove School, which runs every two weeks. Residents also advise the students on how to best keep their school vegetable patch going smoothly.

The retirement village in Willen also hosts a weekly IT clinic for older people, where residents can drop in and get advice from the students on all of their computer issues, right from the very basics up to learning about blogging and using social media to keep in touch.

The day after the award was presented, the Oakgrove pupils came in for their last IT session before the Christmas holidays, and residents all said how much they would miss them.

Many of the students say that coming to Lovat Fields on a regular basis has given them an interest in volunteering and they intend to continue even after the project finishes.

When Shenley Wood Village opens in February, residents there will also get involved with the local schools as part of the scheme.

The ExtraDons project is funded by Comic Relief and is run by Cathryn O'Reilly, the Education Officer at the Milton Keynes Dons Sport and Education Trust.
