Birmingham Smile Appeal

ExtraCare has launched a major capital appeal in Birmingham to raise £10 million to build Village Centres in five ExtraCare villages across the City. These Centres will provide affordable, state of the art health and social facilities, making a positive difference to the lives of thousands of local older people.

Did you know?

Just over half the people in Birmingham aged over 85 years or more live alone.

45% of Birmingham's older residents have a limiting long-term illness.

There are estimated to be over 10,000 older Birmingham residents living with dementia, a quarter of whom are living alone.

About 16% of Birmingham's older residents provide unpaid care to another person for reasons of health or old age.

The Village Centres

These valuable Village Centres will:

Include ExtraCare Well-being Centres to support preventative healthcare, and Enriched Opportunities Suites to support residents who develop dementia.

Aim to offer a 'home for life', with up to 24 hour on site care and support from ExtraCare's qualified staff.

Help people make new friendships and relieve isolation.

Encourage people to cherish old skills and hobbies and to develop new ones.

Help couples stay together in later life and give the whole family piece of mind.

Extend their services to support older people and their families in the surrounding communities.

New Oscott Village in Erdington is the first of the five and opened in 2010 - a successful first year has seen residents who attend well-being assessments improve their health scores by over 15%.  The Village is already over subscribed.

Pannel Croft Village in Newtown represents part of a major regeneration project in this part of the City and will provide 180 much-needed, affordable homes and facilities for the community there. It opens in Winter 2012.

Hagley Road Village off the Hagley Road in Harborne, will provide 240 homes and is due to start construction in Autumn 2011 for opening in 2013.
