In a nutshell
Diane Whitehead, Manager, says: "We have a group called re-cycled
rhythm. All of their instruments are made from re-cycled material
and they meet every week to practice their performance. They
usually have routines which they showcase at events. This was the
idea of one of our residents - it's typical of the innovation you
see in this Village. Residents have travelled to Greece to learn to
sail, swam with dolphins in Mexico and, closer to home, are always
putting on a show, potting plants in the greenhouse or doing
something that involves the wider community. The welcome here
is enormous and the activity is continuous - but residents and
staff are gentle and kind and you can have the privacy if you need
it."
Joyce Loveday (resident): Joyce was heavily involved in the
development of Brunswick Gardens long before it was built, mainly
through her former links with Woodhouse Community Forum which
supported the project from 2002. She attended weekly Friends
meetings in a local club and helped organise activities and
events.
Joyce is the first to admit she keeps herself very busy in the
Village, working in the coffee bar twice a week, acting as a
contact for the local charity shop and helping whenever she is
needed. She is also taking weekly piano lessons with a tutor who
comes to the Village.
She was one of the first to move in the Village and at the time
said living there would seem like being on holiday in a hotel. She
now says that has turned out to be true. She was previously lonely
living on her own and avoided going out in the evenings. Those days
are now over and she admits she doesn't know what she would have
done as she got older if the Village had not been built.
