The ExtraCare Challenge

As the 2012 Olympics are rapidly approaching, ExtraCare has decided to get involved by challenging its schemes and villages to 'travel' 1,000 miles each.

See the ExtraCare torch relay!

Olypmics

These miles can be clocked up in various ways, from walking or cycling in a gym to a range of other activities such as archery or horse riding!

We are also holding a competition amongst our residents to design the ExtraCare Olympic Torch. The winning entry will then be taken to each housing scheme and village in an Olympic Relay, finishing the tour on the day of the opening ceremony.

Baroness Heyhoe Flint launches ExtraCare Olympics

Baroness Rachael Heyhoe Flint OBE went to ExtraCare's Broadway Gardens Housing Scheme in Wolverhampton recently, to launch ExtraCare's Olympics challenge.

The Baroness, the best known female cricketer in England, met residents who will all be taking part in the challenge.

Broadway's Activities Co-ordinator Lorraine Evans, who has organised the programme, was a pupil of the Baroness when she taught Physical Education at Northcote Bi-Lateral School in Bushbury in the sixties.

Lorraine reveals that the Broadway Gardens programme will include a boxing match involving sisters May Phillips and Betty Cartwright, sailing on Gailey Pools by Sheila Redmond and Jean Nicholls - who learned how to sail on an ExtraCare trip to a Greek island - an indoor archery competition at Tettenhall Archery Club with tenants Dolly McHale, Eric Taylor, Ivy Wills and Jan Ruscoe and horse riding through Cannock Chase by Irene Shennan and Barbara Roberts.

Other activities will include a penalty shoot out competition against 'Wolfie' at Wolverhampton Wanderers ground, track events, cricket matches, cycling in the scheme's gym and much, much more!
